Karen Turpin - Strand 6 Co-ordinator
Karen would have been your typical WP student many years ago when she went to university – she was the first in the family to even consider higher education and from a pretty typical working class family. After a degree in Experimental Psychology at Oxford, she did a PGCE in post-16 education at University of Wales College Newport, and taught psychology in Filton College, Bristol, for a couple of years. She wanted a bit more of a challenge (oh so foolish!) so started a PhD in post-16 education at the University of Greenwich in 1998. Unfortunately she got ME in the middle of it, so had to suspend it for 2 years, but eventually graduated in 2004 – six years after starting! This led on to a post as a research fellow investigating Widening Participation students at the University of Plymouth, followed by another research post in Sociology. It was then she realised that it wasn’t research itself she enjoyed, but working with university students and school pupils She started working as the project coordinator for the Healthcare Strand in 2005, and loves working with university students and school pupils – all the best bits of teaching without the paperwork!
In her spare time she likes to play poker and belly dance - great exercise for those hips! (Karen is on the right of the photo)
